Jennifer Welch is the Early College Coordinator at Passaic High School in Passaic, New Jersey, an urban, immigrant community. There she initiates and manages several programs designed to create opportunity and equity for the school’s 3,000 students. Jennifer manages several grants and internship programs designed to promote opportunity to the students of the city. She is responsible for Advanced Placement and dual enrollment programs designed to give students an opportunity to graduate high school better prepared for college and, having already earned college credits, encouraging their timely graduation while limiting their debt load.
Jennifer is a frequent presenter and staff developer on best practices in education and social studies education. She is a past member of the iCivics Educator Council, dedicated to promoting the study of active citizenship in our nation’s schools, as well as the New Jersey State Teachers Advisory Panel (2013-2016). Her publications include, “A Different View of AP US History,” in The Social Science Docket (June 2016).
Jennifer’s parents moved to the US shortly before she was born, and she is the first in her family to complete college. She holds an undergraduate degree in American Civilizations from Brown University and an M.A. in Urban Education – ESL from New Jersey City University. She is currently pursuing an Ed.M. from Teachers College, Columbia University in Social Studies Education. She holds New Jersey certifications as a Teacher of Social Studies, Elementary School Teacher, Teacher of English as a Second Language, Teacher of Bilingual/Bicultural Education, Supervisor, and Principal. A skilled and passionate teacher for over 25 years, she taught history to a variety of populations – ESL, bilingual, college preparatory, honors, and Advanced Placement.
Jennifer is a member of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Senoritas Latinas Sorority, Inc., and serves on the organization’s National Policy and Compliance Board. She is also a lector and choir member at her parish, and a member of the Franklin Woman’s Council, the Brown University Latino Alumni Council, the Brown Women’s Launch Pad, and the Central Jersey Brown Alumni Club. Jennifer and her husband Rob raise their three children in central New Jersey: budding computer programmer Samuel, 20; Rachel Maddow trainee Abigail, 17; and chorine Hannah, 14.
