Center for Community Alternatives

Cherisse Pittman is the Reentry Specialist at the Center for Community Alternatives (CCA), an agency whose mission is to promote re-integrative justice and reduce reliance on incarceration through advocacy, services and public policy development in pursuit of civil and human rights. Cherisse is an alumna of the University of Montevallo (UM) and Syracuse University (SU), respectively. While completing her master’s degree at SU, her concentration was communities, organizations, policy, planning and administration (COPPA). Currently at CCA, she serves individuals affected by the criminal justice system and facilitates a cognitive behavioral therapy course, Thinking for a Change. During the twelve week course, she teaches numerous social and problem solving skills. Upon clients’ release, she also advocates for the services often needed to reintegrate back into society, including: mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, and public assistance. In the future, Cherisse hopes to obtain her doctorate in policy and continue empowering families affected by incarceration.
